Late Power Surge Not Enough as Islanders Drop Finale to Southeastern

HAMMOND, La. - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team dropped the finale of its conference road series against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday afternoon, finding its power stroke late but being unable to overcome a cold start and getting taken down by a final score of 5-4.

The Islanders (16-19, 5-12 SLC) found themselves struggling mightily at the plate to start things off against the Lions (23-14, 12-6 SLC), failing to record a hit through the first six innings of play and getting just a lone baserunner on via an error on a ground ball hit by Isaiah Afework with two outs in the opening frame. At the same time, the hosts came out of the gates strong, jumping on the board with two runs in their first time up and then adding one more apiece in the second and third to make it a 4-0 game.

The first sign of life for A&M-Corpus Christi appeared in the top of the seventh, coming from a familiar face in Jarrett Flaggert. After crushing his first home run of the season just a day earlier, the third baseman tagged another one with two outs in the frame, taking an elevated 1-2 offering and smashing it to the opposite field for a solo shot that broke up starter Blake Lobell's no-hitter and put the visitors in the run column.

Now with the monkey finally off their back, the Islanders once again took Lobell deep in the eighth, with Karson Krowka doing the honors this time by depositing an 0-1 pitch past the bullpen in left field for a solo homer of his own to make it a two-run ballgame. This was not only Krowka's first longball of the season but the first of his entire three-year career with the program, coming in his 87th game and 211th at bat in the blue and green.

While this was going on, A&M-Corpus Christi was able to hang in the ballgame thanks to a fantastic effort on the mound from Luke Singleton, who entered in the fourth for his second appearance of the series after earning the save on Friday and shut down Southeastern for four innings of work. The lefty allowed just a lone hit and two walks while punching out five hitters in total, and he ended his outing strong, retiring 11 of his final 13 batters faced to keep his team within striking distance. It wasn't until Singleton's departure that the Lions finally got going at the plate again, answering Krowka's solo homer with one of their own in the bottom of the eighth to go back ahead by three.

Needed an extended rally to make up this gap, the Islanders nearly got the job done in the ninth. Jackson Smith started things off with a single to get traffic on, and with two outs, Flaggert struck once again, winning an eight-pitch battle with Lobell in emphatic fashion by crushing his third homer of the last two games. This two-run blast from Flaggert brought the team to within just one, but it could not cut it down all the way, grounding out in the next plate appearance to end the day on a sour note.

The Islanders will now finish off their six-game road trip with a big test on Tuesday, heading to Austin to do battle with No. 2 Texas at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
