CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team will play three conference series over the next week, starting with a three-game series against McNeese at Chapman Field this Friday and Saturday.
The Islanders take on the Cowgirls Friday at 4 p.m. before a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. It will initiate nine games in as many days as they will head to Nicholls for three games Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home April 17 and 18 to host Northwestern State for another trio of contests.
After the busy week, the Islanders will only have one final nonconference game remaining on the home schedule with Texas State coming to town April 21. The final conference series will be played on the road at SFA April 24-25 as the Islanders fight for seeding in the conference tournament.
Through the league slate,
Eva Gallegos and
Kayla Santiago have emerged as team leaders at the plate both with .296 averages. They also match each other in hits (8) and RBIs (3). Jada Zapaeda leads with nine hits and six runs.
In the circle, Gallegos has proven as a two-way player after throwing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief against conference leader Southeastern.
Holly Ayala has also thrown scoreless through 7.1 innings. In the win column,
Kendra Winfrey has a trio of victories and has struck out 36 conference batters.
